FOLEGANDROS BEACHES
The beaches of Folegandros are some of the most beautiful beaches of Cyclades. Crystal waters and sea bottoms painted from the green Stone of the island, secluded sandy coves shaded by tamarisks and taverns serving fresh fish by the water. You can access the beaches by car, bus, or fishing boats. Secluded beaches are best reached on foot.
Karabostasis (Chochlidia) is located just off the island’s port. It is one of the most popular beaches of the island with bars, taverns and coastal hotels. During the summer months the naval group of Folegandros delivers swimming and sailing courses for children. The beach is constituted mainly by sand and pebble and is ideal for families with small children as one end is quite shallow and the cove is sheltered from winds so the water is rarely choppy.
Livadi is located in the south-eastern side of the island in the homonym settlement. It can be easily reached by car from the island’s port. The beach allocates organised camping with restaurant.
Agali is located in the southern shore of the island and can be reached by car or with fishing boats from Karabostasi. In the region you will find taverns and rented rooms. Nearby is the small, sandy cove of Fyra, reachable by footpath (about 10 mins). Also nearby is Yalifos, also accessible by the footpath leading to Ayios Nikolaos. Near the beach of Yalifos you can find a few rented rooms but without electricity.
Agios Nikolaos is a beach on the southern shore, close to Agali in an uninhabited part of the island. It’s accessible by water bus from Agali or by foot—20 minutes from Agali and 45 minutes from Ano Meria. There is no road access and the beach allocates one only restaurant. Tamarisks along the shore offer shade and the beach is sandy with small pebbles.
Libadaki is located near the Lighthouse of Aspropoyntas. You can reach the beach with fishing boats from Karabostasi and Agali or follow the path from Pano Meria with one hour distance; the road access is not possible. The beach offers little natural shade; swimmers should bring drinking water as the beach is quite remote and there has no tavern. The beauty of beach is unique with white pebbles and crystal waters.
The deserted beach of Ampeli is reachable with private boat. For those who love hicking they can follow the path from the chapel of Agios Panteleimonas in Ano Meria with a distance of 30 minutes. It is a small quiet beach with pebbles and shingle. Orchards slightly off the shore offer thick shade. Swimmers should bring drinking water.
Ayios Georgios is located in the north-eastern side of the island in an uninhabited region. Access is by a good dirt road, about 10 minutes from Ano Meria or by foot, after an hour’s walk. Tamarisks offer shade. Swimmers should bring drinking water. The beach and seabed are sand and pebble. Near there you will find the beach Lygaria.
In the northern side of island you will meet Boreina and Serfiotiko. The beaches are accessible only by foot following the path from the mills that is found in the left street of Chora. You can also follow the path from Ano Meria with a distance of 20 minutes for Boreina and 40 minutes for Serfiotiko. The beaches are located in uninhabited regions and swimmers should bring drinking water. In Boreina you can see the green Stone that dominates in Folegandros. |
