PAROS LOCAL EVENTS
Paros is ideal for the full range of water sports. Wind surfing is especially popular thanks to the strong northerly winds, while there are facilities for such sports on many beaches. There are two water parks on Paros, while horseback riding is an alternate way to explore the island. Local cultural associations are quite active and organize a number of events aimed at highlighting Paros’s extensive cultural wealth through music, dance, and drama performances, especially during the summer months.
Each year, in Marpissa local events are organized for the celebration of Jesus Christ and Easter. The events begin in Good Friday with the representations of the life and passion of the Christ. This custom began before 1937 with the inspiration of the schoolteacher Vasilia Kafourou. This custom is safeguarded by the residents up to today. The evening of Good Friday in an atmosphere of Christian spirit you will experience unique customs. Traditional roasted lamb, red eggs and wine are offered during the feast; Local musical and dancing groups perform. All these remain unforgettable to the visitors. Once a year, each church hosts a paniyiri to observe the feast of its saint, combining religious observance with folk traditions. The main such festivals in summer are at Metamorphosi in Marpissa on August 6, at Panayia in Paroikia on August 15, at Ayios Ioannis at Dryos and Lefkes on August 29.
