THIRASIA SIGHTSEEING

The settlement of Manolas is the capital of island. Built in the very top of kalnteras Thirasia, it offers you splendid view to Santorini. You can visit the church of Agios Konstantinos, a building dated in 1874. Walking in the small alleys of the settlement you meet the traditional bakery with wood-fired oven near to the grammar school and a grocery shop.

The settlement of Keras or Keradiana, as the locals call it, is located southeast of the capital. The settlement was inhabited 30-40 years ago and is standing high on the rock giving panoramic view to the volcanic islands Kamenes.

The settlement Agia Irini is one of the most graphic settlements of the island. You can eat in the fish-taverns and see places where the fish boats are moored. For those who want to explore the island, they can use the local bus or taxi from the main road that will lead you to the centre of the island. For those who love hiking, there area lot of alternative ways through the small alleys “rimidia” (as the local named them) in order to explore the beauties of island.

The settlement of Potamos, is the first inhabited settlement that you meet. It is built in a gorge that gave it its name. Very beautiful houses with courtyards full red geranium and bougainvillea. The centre of settlement is dominated by two churches, Agios Dimitrios and Panagia Giatrissa.

The settlement Agrilia is located southwestern of the island and is one of the oldest rural settlements. You will have to consult a local in order to take the correct path for the settlement. You can see the traditional caves and the wine factories of the region. In the entry of Agrilia you can see the church of Panagia Eisodion, a building dated from 1887 with unique architecture.

The settlement of Korfoy is the old port of the island. You can go down in Korfo, by riding a mule following 270 paved steps that leads you straight to the windless port. Sailing boats and fishing cutters are docking there daily, making trips from Athinios to the Volcano, the hot springs and Thirasia. You can enjoy fresh fish and traditional dishes in the taverns near the sea.
